Can I give my dog Valium to chill him out from his allergic reaction to his vaccination shots?
My dog just got a couple shots and is having an allergic reaction, he wont stop itching. Is it ok to give him half of a 15 mg valium to chill him out? or is it too dangerous? if it is what are my alternatives.

What kind of dog is it and how much does it weigh?? That is a big factor in figuring out the dosage.
EDIT: I agree with the others… give it benydryl to treat an allergic reaction. But if a vet was to prescribe valium for a dog it would be for ONE mg… and NO MORE

Benedryl or claritin but benedryl is best 10mg per 10 pounds

Absolutely not. Aspirin: 81mg per 20 pounds of dog. Dogs also can have Benadryl but I don’t know the amount, and that may interfere with effectiveness of the vaccinations. Call your vet. What are YOU doing with valium anyway.

15mg valium??? that with knock out an adult human for 24hrs… i have NEVER seen valium used to treat allergic reaction, if anything it will compromise the breathing more than helping any anxiety caused by the reaction. This dog needs to go to the vet for epinephrine or diphenhydramine at proper dosages.
add: valium does not come in 15mg tablets, it comes in 2 mg, 5 mg or 10 mg.

Valium is not for allergic reactions. If you think the dog is having a reaction, you need to give it Benadryl, 1mg per lb of body weight, and watch the dog carefully. If it starts to have problems breathing or there is any swelling of the face, etc, rush to an emergency vet right away!
Spicey – Asprin does nothing for allergic reactions!

do not give your dog valium you would want to use benadryl for an allergy but it depends on his size how much you should give him, But that being said if he had an allergic reaction to his vaccines you should call your vet because ive heard of dogs dieing from vaccine reactions. Please call your vet or give him benadryl if you must.

No valium!!!!!!!!!!!! If the dog is not vomiting and has no trouble breathing you can give 1mg of benedryl for every pound the dog weighs, every 8 hours. So a 12 pound dog gets half a tablet of a 25 mg benedryl every eight hours .The symptoms can reappear for up to 72 hours. Call your vet tomarrow and tell them about the reaction, they will need to premedicate the dog before vaccines next time.

Benadryl is the usual treatment for reactions to a vaccine. Be sure to ask your vet about the proper dosage for your dog. Dogs can take valium, but please do NOT give it to him without asking the vet first. And valium doesn’t treat allergic reactions. Allergic reactions are a response of the immune system wherein there is a large amount of histamine released by the cells in the area of the reaction. Benadryl will stop this, not valium.
Generally a dog takes about a mg of benadryl per pound of body weight. I have a miniature Eskie who weighs 13 pounds. She takes half of a 25 mg benadryl tab = 12.5 mg. But ask your vet for the correct dosage for your dog.

Pick up your phone – dial the number of your vet – explain about the allergic reaction – wait for the answer of your vet – follow vets instructions
