Can anxiety ever get so bad it turns into psychosis?

I have an anxiety disorder. I am wondering if one can ever become so stressed and anxious that it could turn into psychosis. I am so scared. Thanks!

I have an anxiety disorder as well. yes, at times you can feel as though it is taking over your life, but it will not turn into psychosis. What steps are you taking to control it. There are many prescription pills that you can take with a doctors advice but even better then pills is talking with a doctor and finding out what truly makes you anxious. I tried 2 different prescription pills through the advice of a doctor, they helped out alot, but now I am pill free and anxiety free. everyone experiences anxiety in one form or another its how you handle that anxiety that makes a difference and in my opinion I feel I am a better person now for experiencing it and overcoming it.

No, anxiety does not turn into psychosis. In general anxiety disorders are totally separate from psychotic disorders. Rarely people become so stressed (not typically anxiety, but stress from a traumatic event) that they go into what is essentially mental shock, called acute stress disorder, and that may occasionally cause some mild psychotic features (such as hallucinations). But this isn’t really anxiety, and the kind of anxiety disorder you are probably talking about (you did not specify which one but I am assuming either generalized or social) does not typically present with psychotic features. You do not have to worry about having a psychotic break, I promise, that is just your anxiety making you think so.

    Hope that helps!

Psychosis does come on people sometimes in their late teens and twenties. I suppose it could start out with severe anxiety and then develop further. You don’t really give enough details as to what the anxiety centers around but honestly, it sounds like you are just a neurotic worrier, so of course you are worrying about this too ! Buck up and take your meds, worry about something that doesn’t have to do with you, if you can imagine such a thing.
